A Shopify payment gateway in India has to be a third-party provider, because Shopify Payments, Shopify's own gateway, is not offered to Indian stores. Shopify's India page lists providers such as Razorpay, PayU and PhonePe PG, and you add one under Settings > Payments. Shopify then charges a third-party transaction fee on top of the gateway's fee (2% on the Basic plan, as listed on 9 October 2026). Cash on delivery is a separate manual method with no such fee.

Is Shopify Payments available in India?

No. Shopify's help page on supported countries for Shopify Payments lists countries one by one, and India is not among them. It says that if your country isn't listed, you need a third-party payment provider.

On Shopify's payment gateways page, the India filter showed Razorpay, PayU India, PhonePe PG, CCAvenue, Easebuzz, Paytm Payment Gateway, Pine Labs and others on 9 October 2026, and not Shopify Payments. Shopify says there are no fees to integrate a payment gateway. Each gateway sets its own pricing.

What Shopify charges on top

Shopify's help center says third-party transaction fees apply to all transactions processed through third-party gateways. Rates from the Shopify India pricing page, as listed on 9 October 2026:

PlanThird-party transaction fee
Basic2%
Grow1%
Advanced0.6%
Plus0.2%

On Basic, every order paid through a gateway costs you Shopify's 2% and the gateway's own fee. Shopify's help page says you are not charged third-party transaction fees for manual payments such as cash on delivery. Plan prices and running costs: Shopify store cost in India.

Gateways Shopify lists for India

From each gateway's own pages, as listed on 9 October 2026. Razorpay and PayU list GST on top of their fees.

GatewayMethodsFeeSettlement
RazorpayUPI, cards, wallets, netbanking2% + GST in its FAQ; setup and annual fee ₹0T+2 working days by default
PayUCards, netbanking, UPI, wallets, EMI2% cards, netbanking, wallets; 3% Amex, Diners, EMI; no setup feeGenerally T+2
PhonePe PGUPI, cards, netbanking, wallets1.99% limited-period offer, T&C apply; zero setup feeNot stated on page

Razorpay's pricing page lists 2.15% for corporate credit cards, and up to 3% for international cards. PhonePe labels its 1.99% a limited period offer, so ask what the rate becomes afterwards. PayU's plugin page also lists a buy now pay later option. What shows at your checkout depends on what you enable in the gateway dashboard. For a head-to-head, see Razorpay vs Cashfree vs PayU.

What a gateway asks from you

Razorpay's account activation page asks for personal PAN, Aadhaar scans, bank account details, your registered business name and GST details, plus a website with terms and conditions and a privacy policy. Its documents guide adds a partnership deed for a firm, and a certificate of incorporation and MoA and AoA for a private limited company. Some categories need licences first: Razorpay names FSSAI for food and a drug licence for pharmaceuticals.

Only the store owner can add a payment provider in Shopify.

Cash on delivery

COD is a manual payment method in Shopify, not a gateway. Go to Settings > Payments, pick it in the manual payment methods section, add the details and payment instructions your customer sees, and activate it. Such orders show as unpaid until you mark them paid after you collect the money.

COD carries no Shopify transaction fee, but you carry the risk of refused parcels. Razorpay's Magic Checkout documentation describes "prepaid and COD" support and says it "reduces COD RTOs" (returns to origin) by analysing shopping history and address quality. It is a separate product from the standard gateway. Its Shopify page asks you to submit a form with your Razorpay details, and says enabling takes up to 48 working hours. On the Shopify Basic plan, customers land on a Razorpay-hosted order confirmation page.

Add a gateway in Shopify admin

Shopify's help center gives these steps:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments.
  2. Click Choose a provider (or See all other providers, depending on your setup).
  3. Select the provider from the list.
  4. Enter your account credentials for that provider.
  5. Click Activate, then Save.

The list is filtered by your store address under Settings > General, so a missing provider often means the address is wrong. Only one credit card provider can be active at a time. See Shopify's configuring providers page.

Some gateways install as an app: Razorpay's Shopify guide says to click Add payment method under Additional payment methods, search by provider and install the app.

Before you apply

  • Privacy, refund and terms pages published.
  • PAN, ID, bank proof and business documents gathered.
  • Category licences checked.
  • One gateway opened first, not three.
  • Fee page, GST note and settlement terms read.

Test a payment

Shopify's help center says to place at least one test order during setup or after any change to payment settings. You can test a payment gateway only after choosing a paid plan, and while a provider is in test mode, customers cannot place live orders.

Use the gateway's own test mode, and disable it before accepting live payments. After a test, check that the order appears in Shopify, the payment shows in the gateway dashboard, and the tax and shipping lines are right. See our store checklist.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Razorpay with Shopify?

Yes. Razorpay is in Shopify's India provider list and publishes a Shopify guide. You need a Razorpay account and an active Shopify store, and Razorpay asks that your website be reviewed before integration.

What are the top 5 payment gateways in India?

No official body ranks them, so any "top 5" is an opinion. Use the list Shopify shows for India, which on 9 October 2026 included Razorpay, PayU India, PhonePe PG, CCAvenue, Easebuzz and Paytm. Then compare fees, methods, settlement and support on each gateway's own pages.

Does Shopify charge a transaction fee in India?

Yes, with a third-party gateway: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, as listed on 9 October 2026, plus the gateway's own fee. Manual methods such as cash on delivery carry no third-party transaction fee.

Can I accept UPI on Shopify?

Yes, through a gateway that supports it. Razorpay and PhonePe name UPI on their own pages, and PayU lists UPI on its Shopify plugin page. The gateway decides the fee.
